The goal of the R660 Red turbocharger is to be a robust and reliable 400-500+HP capable turbo for the K20C. To achieve this, the stock TD04 frame size needed to be ditched. The TD04 design is popular amongst OEMs for its compact size and quick response. The issue is trying to squeeze more than 400HP out of this platform often comes at the cost of reliability. Upsizing was the only choice for RV6 to realize their power goals. 

The RV6 R660 Turbocharger is built around a TD05 bearing housing - about twice the size of a TD04. What is the implication? A larger 8mm ball bearing is used for quick spool and increased thrust loads. Adding to the reliability, oversized coolant passages, using -10AN lines, were included in the design.

Using the larger frame turbo allowed for a turbine housing with a .81 A/R. This significantly reduces the back pressure between turbo and engine, solving issues with unstable boost control. On the compressor side, a bypass valve was integrated into the housing to simplify the system - no need for an external BOV. Despite the larger size, this turbo remains a bolt-on solution. 

For the compressor and turbine wheels, RV6 chose the newest technology with FEA optimized blade designs. The compressor wheel is a lightweight point milled billet design. A MAR-M super alloy turbine wheel and shaft was used to allow the exhaust side to handle serious temperatures and loads.
